Over the last 3 years the Youth Council has achieved much and been involved in lots of different activities. Here are some of them:
- Kirklees Anti Bullying Conference “Say No to Cyber Bullying” – an awareness raising event for schools
- Have I got views for you – a fun DVD promoting the Youth Council
- Healthy Body, Healthy Mind – advice and information at a young people’s health fair
- Green Day pack for schools – a DVD and suggested materials given to schools to encourage environmental awareness
- Park Warden Campaign – learning from the experiences of young people in one area led to a campaign for similar services in a nearby area
- Young Carers Card Campaign – researching, producing and launching a Kirklees Young Carers Card
- Creative Consultation Toolkit – designing and producing a toolkit which is intended to help Youth Councillors gather the views of other young people in a more creative way
- The Big Picture Event – collecting the views of young people across Kirklees, about their lives in Kirklees and presenting this information at the 2009 Big Picture Event to an audience of 190 influential adults
- The Mosquito Device Ban-We campaigned, petitioned and met with the cabinet members to secure a ban of mosquito devices on all Council buildings!
- Went on a European Exchange, visiting European Parliament.
- Finding out ‘The Big Piority’ from Kirklees Young People to support the Childrens Trust and the Children and Young people Plan.
- Campaigning to improve transport. Resulting in Kirklees Young People helping create the SafeMark resources for Metro. KYCs information also helped support the introduction of a Metro Half Day ticket. This cross network bus ticket allows young people to travel across West Yorkshire for £2.60.
- Attended BYC’s ‘Bitain Better Connected’ transport summit.
- Took part in the Kirklees ’HealthWatch’ consulation.
- Fed back on the KYPF website and completed a review of Sexual Health Services in North Kirklees (Young Advisors).
- Completed the Fear of Crime Report in partnership with British Transport Police and West yorkshire Police.
- Created this website!
- Wrote an Annual Report.
- Continued to develop links with School Councils.
- Took part in the British Youth Councils consultation on ‘The Big Society’ which was fed directly back to Westminster.
- The ‘Buns & Banter’ event. Young People planned and delivered an event which brought together 90 teens with key Decision Makers, Professionals and Elected Memebers to talk about the things that matter. The information collected about Money, Jobs and Opportunities, Marketing, Health and Town Planning all fed into an adult conference the folowing week. A number of projects to involve young people in planning and service delivery have come about as a result.
- Started the positive publicity campaign and contributed to the National ‘Do Something UK’ #reverse riots campaign.
- Met with local MP’s, Councillors, The Leader of the Council and the Councils Chief Executive.
- Attended lots of events from the Olympic Torch visiting Huddersfield to the BYC’s ‘Iron Lady Debate’ in London.
- Started to work on the Police and Crime Commissioner Youth Advisory Board.
- Won awards for our achievement (Diana, BYC, UK Youth and Crimebeat Awards).
- Created opportunities for personal development. Some KYCs went on to gain employment collecting census data, counting votes for electoral services and even take internships at Westminster!
