Young Carers Blog

Hi,

My name is Steph and I represent Young Carers in Kirklees.

As you might know I believe that a young carer’s voice needs to be heard. Not many people are aware of what a young carer is and what it entails, making it harder for people to relate to us. I believe that as part of the youth council I will be able to help change people’s attitudes and raise awareness.

These are the areas that I am going to be working on at first:

  • Raising awareness for the YOUNG CARERS CARD
  • Making links with adults in Schools and Colleges in order to get an estimation of how many young carers there are
  • Building up a picture of how many Young Carers we have in our area

We had our meeting with Paul as you can see by the lovely photo!!

Paul told us how passionate he is for the project and has given us ideas of contacts and how to secure some funding. The only condition is to keep him updated!!!

It was great to meet him and he is a right laugh it gave Khizar a good idea of how things are going to unfold and see how we are supported at all levels of the project which makes all the difference!!!!

Our next step is to work out how things are going to play out in the future, keep tabs on the pack distribution and prepare Khizar for the role takeover at the beginning of September. So we weren’t kidding when we said we have been busy. Talk to you soon!! :)

Heya everyone been a while but we have been busy.

We had our meeting with Joanne Simpson regarding the distribution of the resource pack. We have developed an action plan. We have decided that we will give the resource pack to the DSP in the schools. Simply put we have identified one person in each school to help maintain the system.

To maintain equality among schools we have decided that we will make some of the resources available online and also give the schools various paper resources E.G posters and leaflets. Training officers will emphasise that year 6 students can apply for a card prior to moving to Secondary Schools.

We have put together a sheet of contacts and hints and tips for teachers to prepare the young carers. We have made a few alterations to the posters (making them a little more up-to-date).

So the next step is to meet with Paul Johnson and try work out the logistics of it all and even better see if we can get any wonga!!!

Met with York Young Carers yesterday and it’s been very productive. We have witnessed their young carers card scheme and we have taken a few pointers on board. We found out that there were similarites between both the York young carers and Kirklees young carers and this helped with looking at the realistic approach to things. We have had a few ideas and we have noticed that what we have proposed is similar to what they have implemented in York so we got an idea of how to set up and maintain the projects in the future. So now we have managed to secure the dvd’s so we can use them to present to schools and raise the young carer profile. Yay!! :)

We are on a roll!!!

We met with the safeguarding officer at Kirklees college and they are happy to help. :)

We have also managed to get in touch with York Young Carers and we are going to be meeting up soon and top it all off we have manged to secure a slot on a local college application form for young carers. We have also met with Kirklees safeguarding  Officer - Schools and Learning who has agreed to support us. So in the next couple of weeks our priority is to put together a presentation and resource pack to present to schools and colleges.

Guess there is no rest for the wicked!

Hi everyone, It’s been a while but since the last post. I’ve met up with the Young Carers Council and discussed with John some of the new changes that will be affecting the running of Young Carers, I hope to post more information on these changes once they formally take into place.

Secondly, planning on the Young Carers Summit 2013. We are hoping that this can be held sometime in June throughout Carers week. I’m wanting it to be a really enjoyable and informative event for everyone and really push the publicity of Young Carers and allow them to meet others and tell others about their amazing hard work and effort in their lives.

So far everything is at planning stages but if you don’t plan then nothing gets done right? I hope to keep posting as things are more set and formalized :)
