Denby Dale, Kirkburton and Mirfield

Megan and Chris are your representatives for the Denby Dale and Kirkburton areas, and Elle represents Mirfield.

In Denby Dale and Kirkburton, we know that transport is an issue for you – particularly when you want to travel from village to village, and we have continued to talk to local Elected Members about this on your behalf.

You are telling us that you need better skate parks in your areas, but we need more information about this – talk to us on this site or message us on our Facebook page “Kirklees Youth Council Denby Dale and Kirkburton”, or email us at youth.council@kirklees.gov.uk

We meet 4 times a year with your local elected members where we specifically discuss young people’s issues. We need you to keep us informed so that we have things to work on. Any young people can join in with these meetings, so look out for the dates on the website and come along or post your issues for us to discuss.

In Mirfield you are telling us you have problems with lack of things to do and places to go locally. In London Park you say you are worried about vandalism and trouble in your area. We are taking your issues seriously and trying to help signpost you to speak to the right people about them. Please keep the information coming – we need to know about EVERY area, so drop us a line and we will always reply.

Elle says: In th
e past few weeks I have being talking to young people and asking their opinions on Mirfield. e.g. Schools, sex education advice, things to do, money, job opportunities and high street shops. I have also being speaking to the sixth form teachers at my school and getting them to give the sixth formers questionnaires about job and opportunities and another questionnaire all about the 16-19 bursary leaflet.

The majority of people that I have spoken to say that the choices of schools in Mirfield are quite good and there aren’t many things to do and not many jobs around. What do YOU think?

Megan says: At my school I did a quiz/debate about young children. I rushed around school and many were asking what I was up to. It was hard work, but I got lots of useful information! I then went to a locality meeting, and typed up this blog – we will be analysing the results later.

I will soon be involved with, in the near future, a health professional leading a survey around issues by Calerdale & Kirklees Health Trust seeking the views and opinions of pupils across the district about the services they would like to see support children in school. I’m really looking forward to this opportunity and hope that it will make a direct impact.

Chris says: As well as updating the Denby Dale and Kirkburton Facebook page, I have attended a locality meeting in which I’m writing this blog.

I have also been part of a small working group committed to gathering young people’s perceptions and views about the support they’ve received in relation to jobs and GCSE options. The group aims to generally feed back this information to have a direct impact for future advice for students – I have conducted a survey at school and spoken to ConneXions  – young people will be given the questionnaire to fill out.  Analysis to follow.

In the future, I will be attending the formal KYC meeting and discussing with peers how we can act on the issues arising in our locality.

Chris says: How safe do you feel in your area? One of the major themes that came out of a recent survey done by young people was that safety was a big issue – please let the Kirklees Youth Council know more about this so we can act on it. This is your chance to have a say about what goes on in your area! Do the survey below – it’ll only take a few minutes and could have a real impact!
